Wausau, WI July 10th, 2010 – When he’s not behind the wheel of a NASCAR Nationwide car this season, Scott Wimmer is busy running the racetrack he and his father, Ron, own in his hometown of Wausau, WI. After putting in a lot of time, effort, and money to help turn State Park Speedway around, Wimmer is pleased with what he’s seeing. Through four races SPS averages over 1,000 fans per race and on the track has seen some very good racing.
“It’s been really exciting to see it all come together,” says Scott Wimmer, “My Dad and I put in more money fixing it up than we’d planned on, but to see the fans reaction and to see how many people are coming out to the track is amazing.”
One thing Wimmer wanted to make sure they did was make SPS a fan and family friend place. With great ticket prices, the addition of a playground, and action packed racing, it’s a great place for families or fans to spend a summer night.
”Making sure we kept things affordable was a top priority,” says Wimmer, “The price of coming out to the racetrack might be better than taking the family to a movie, and that’s kind of been our measuring stick. We’ve tried to put together some sort of special every race night and have some sort of extra entertainment. Combine that with the great side by side racing we have, it makes it exciting for people in the stands, and hopefully they’ll keep coming back.”
For the Flip Merwin Memorial more than 1,500 people flooded through the gates to help pay tribute to a first class snowmobile racer and one of Wimmer’s best friends who lost his life in 2003. There was standing room only and cars parked more than a half a mile down the road.
“When I grew up racing at State Park the stands were filled every night and you could barely find room on the road to park. That was a goal my Dad and I had, to get this place back to what it was like in the late ‘90’s,” says Wimmer, “So far we are definitely bringing that feeling back and it’s been great to see the response from fans.”
With the decision to race every other week instead of every week, there’s just a handful of races left in the 2010 season, one of which is the Larry Detjens Memorial Race July 29th.
“That’s a race that is very special for me and my family,” says Wimmer, “We are thrilled to bring it back to State Park Speedway this year and I think it has the potential to be one of our biggest races. A bunch of former Detjens Memorial winners are coming back and we have a few special things planned.”
While WImmer continues to try and fill his NASCAR schedule, he enjoys the time he’s spending at the track where it all began, and seeing how it is possible, with the right mindset, to revive a Wausau tradition.
“That’s been our slogan all year,” says Wimmer, “Reviving a Wausau Tradition. And that’s exactly what I think we are doing. It’s been hard not having a full time ride, but this has given me something else to focus on and to see how everything we’ve done is paying off, makes it all worth it.”
