Misfortune Strikes Wimmer, Holiday Inn Racing Team at Texas

A top-10 showing for Scott Wimmer and the Holiday Inn Racing team was dashed when contact with another competitor with just over 50 laps remaining, strapped the No. 29 Chevy with a 13th-place finish in the O’Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway.
As the Wausau, Wis., native was making his way around a lapped car on lap 140, the two made contact, which resulted in extensive right-rear damage to the No. 29 machine. Following the incident, Wimmer’s car became extremely loose and he began to freefall through the field.

At the end of the day, it cost Wimmer and Company a top-10 finish but all was not lost as the Holiday Inn team maintained their fourth position in the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series owners’ championship point standings.

In qualifying early Friday evening, Wimmer wheeled the No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet around the 1.5-mile oval to its best lap of 29.306 seconds (184.263 mph), which was good enough to line up 15th for the 200-lap event.

Wimmer made a quick charge for the leaders in the opening 46 laps, moving up to 10th, but a tight-handling condition prevented him from gaining any more ground.

The first of five caution flags flew on lap 49 and crew chief Pat Smith summoned his driver to pit road one lap later. Four tires, fuel and a minor chassis adjustment was in order and Wimmer returned to the race track ninth for the lap 53 restart.

The adjustments seemed to be spot-on as Wimmer began to make a steady climb up the leaderboard. He was eighth on lap 112, seventh on lap 119 and was inching his way closer to the sixth-place car when he made contact with the No. 24 on lap 140.

A timely caution flag flew on lap 149, giving Smith the opportunity to bring the damaged race car down pit road. Several trips to the service lane under caution allowed the No. 29 Holiday Inn over-the-wall crew to repair the damage in an attempt to return the green and blue machine to at top-10 caliber race car.

Unfortunately, the repairs were only enough to help Wimmer stay on the lead lap and, despite their best efforts, the team was listed 13th in the final rundown.

Kyle Busch captured his 10th win of the season, tying Sam Ard's record for the most wins in a single season. Carl Edwards, Mark Martin, Joey Logano and David Ragan rounded out the top-five finishers.

Richard Childress Racing Teammates Clint Bowyer and Stephen Leicht finished sixth and 18th, respectively.

Next weekend, the NASCAR Nationwide Series will finish out the tour’s most recent westward swing when the division returns to Avondale, Ariz., for the 34th race of the year.

The Hefty Odor Block 200 from Phoenix International Raceway will be televised live on ESPN2 on Sat., Nov. 8 beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Round 34 of the 2008 Nationwide Series championship will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying will be televised live on SPEED the same day beginning a 1 p.m. EST. MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will broadcast qualifying updates live.

SCOTT WIMMER - NO. 29 HOLIDAY INN CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO SS –

“The Holiday Inn Chevrolet was really good until I made contract with the No. 24. It is just frustrating that a lap down car ruined our day. My guys worked really hard to repair the damage but it was just way too loose. I am looking forward to going to Phoenix and hopefully grabbing a win in the final two races.”
