Wimmer places sixth in final race with RCR

By Andrew Ernst • Wausau Daily Herald • November 19, 2008

Scott Wimmer's final race with Richard Childress Racing was a good one, but it wasn't without challenges.

"We had a real good run," he said of his sixth-place finish Saturday in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Ford 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla. "We didn't qualify (27th) quite like we wanted to. I had to switch from the 29 car to the 21, so I was working with a new crew chief and new crew."

The Wausau native drove the No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet in his other 22 starts this season, but because of sponsorship deals with teammate Jeff Burton, who was also racing, Wimmer needed to make the switch to the No. 21 Prilosec OTC/Wal-Mart Chevrolet.

"It was fun," Wimmer said of the switch. "I got to work with Shane Wilson again. I just wish we'd have had a little more time together."

Wimmer finished the season 17th in the Nationwide Series standings, highest among drivers with less than 25 starts. He had 13 top-10 finishes, five top-5 finishes and a win at Nashville on March 22.

He is now shifting his attention to some time off and a job search. RCR announced in August that Wimmer would not be back with the team for the 2009 season.

"I'm still working on stuff," he said of his quest for a ride. "With NASCAR announcing no testing next year, it gives everybody a little more time to sort everything out. I think that gives me an advantage over a lot of the other drivers. I've been to all these racetracks before and I think that bodes well for me."

In the meantime, Wimmer is ready for the time-honored Wisconsin tradition -- gun deer hunting season.

"I'll be back home for deer hunting," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing some family and friends who I haven't been able to see much this year."

Wimmer also has a USO trip to visit troops in Iraq planned for December.

"I'm really looking forward to that," he said. "That's something I've wanted to do for a couple years, but with my schedule it hasn't worked out. I was finally able to make it happen this year. I've talked to several other people who have done it, and they've all really enjoyed the trip."
